What is Life Coaching?

When you work as a professional life coach, you have to be prepared to answer this question over and over again: what is life coaching.

And it’s a fair question. Too often, the job of life coach is glossed over in the mass media, if not actively made fun of. It’s presented as a wishy-washy service paid for by neurotics with more money than they know what to do with.

In reality, nothing could be further from the truth.

What is life coaching?

Life coaching is a method of empowerment designed to help people be the very best that they can be. A professional life coach assists their clients to make, meet, and exceed their goals in both their professional lives and their personal lives.

It is a form of encouragement and assertiveness, but tempered with realism and accountability. A genuine life coach never tells their clients they can achieve anything they set their mind to. Often, that is little more than wishful thinking.

Instead a life coach encourages their clients to take stock of their current situation – be it personal or professional – and to understand the ways in which they can alter it. While we hope we can inspire people to take the relevant steps, the advice we give is almost always practical in nature.

What does life coaching involve?

Life coaching plans will, understandably, vary from person to person. In general terms, it involves the following three key concepts:

Guidance: this is where the life coach provides their client with the support and tools that they need to be able to open their mind and broaden their perspective of their role in the world.

Empowerment: this involves the client utilising those tools – with their life coach’s support – to realise and accept their own self-worth and their value to themselves and others.

Improvement: this is the practical application of the mental and emotional tools the life coach has brought into play. It’s the natural endgame of the process, in which the client moves from where they are to wherever they want to be,

Life coaching is something that anybody can benefit from as its techniques can be incorporated into any lifestyle or profession. As soon as you’re ready to make the change, a life coach will be there to help you do so.
